Central Heating Repairs in Bedford

Most faults diagnosed and repaired on the first visit where possible

Heating Repairs

Central heating repairs by Great Ouse Plumbing & Heating are typically £280 to £450 across Bedford, Kempston and Milton Keynes. We aim to diagnose and repair the fault on the first visit, and many common problems, such as a failed pump, a stuck valve or cold radiators, are fixed the same day. If a part has to be ordered, we explain what is needed and book the repair in as soon as possible.

When the heating stops working you want someone who will find the actual fault rather than guess at it. We test the system properly, from the boiler controls through to the pump, the diverter valve and the thermostat, so the repair fixes the cause and not just the symptom.

In most cases we can diagnose and repair the problem during the first visit. Cold radiators, a system that will not fire, a pump that has seized, low pressure that keeps dropping and hot water without heating are all faults we deal with regularly and carry common parts for.

If a replacement part is required that we do not have on the van, we will explain exactly what is needed and arrange the repair as soon as possible. Our priority is getting your heating and hot water back on with as little disruption to the household as we can manage.

Repairs typically fall between £280 and £450. Where a system is genuinely at the end of its life we will tell you that honestly rather than sell you a repair that will not last, and we can quote for the replacement at the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Heating Repairs Questions

What areas do you cover?

We are based in Bedford and work across Bedford, Kempston and Milton Keynes, along with the surrounding villages including Biddenham, Bromham, Clapham, Great Barford and Wootton. If you are not sure whether you are in range, give us a call and we will tell you straight away.

Are you Gas Safe registered?

Yes. All gas work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. By law, anyone working on gas appliances in the UK must be Gas Safe registered, and you are entitled to ask to see the registration card on any visit.

How long have you been trading?

Hasan worked in the plumbing and heating industry for several years before setting up on his own. The business was incorporated as Great Ouse Plumbing & Heating Ltd in September 2026, company number 17454629.

Do you charge for quotes?

No. Quotes are free and there is no obligation. For larger jobs such as a boiler installation we will look at the property first so the price we give you is based on your actual system rather than a guess over the phone.

How do I pay, and do you offer finance?

We accept bank transfer and cash, and card payments can be arranged by prior agreement. You get a clear price before any work starts, so there are no surprises at the end. We do not currently offer finance, so if you are spreading the cost of a new boiler, talk to us when we quote and we will tell you plainly what the options are.

Do you do emergency callouts?

Yes, we offer 24 hour callouts. If you have a burst pipe, a serious leak or no heating and hot water, call us on 07519 848846 and we will tell you honestly how quickly we can get to you. If you smell gas, leave the property and ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first.

How long will a boiler installation take?

In most cases, we aim to complete boiler installations efficiently and have your new heating and hot water system fully operational by the end of the installation. Most straightforward boiler replacements can be completed within one day. For more complex installations or system upgrades, additional time may be required. We will explain the expected timescale before work begins so you know exactly what to expect.

How much does a new boiler cost?

Boiler installations start from £1,950 supplied and fitted. The final price depends on the boiler you choose, whether the position is changing and what work the existing pipework and system need. You get a clear written price before anything is ordered.

Which boiler should I choose?

It depends on your property, how many bathrooms you have and how the household uses hot water. A combi suits most smaller homes with one bathroom, while a system boiler with a cylinder usually works better where several outlets get used at once. We look at your actual setup and recommend what suits it rather than what is easiest to fit.

Do you remove the old boiler?

Yes. Removing and disposing of the old boiler is included in the installation, and we leave the area clean and tidy when we finish.

What warranty comes with a new boiler?

New boilers come with the manufacturer's warranty, and we register it on your behalf when we complete the installation so your cover starts straight away. The length varies by manufacturer and model, and we will confirm exactly what yours includes when we quote. Most manufacturer warranties require an annual service to stay valid.

Will my radiators need replacing too?

Not usually. In most cases the existing radiators are fine and we simply flush and balance the system as part of the installation. If we find a radiator that is beyond saving or badly undersized for the room, we will tell you before we start and give you the option rather than adding it to the bill afterwards.

Do I really need a boiler service?

Yes, regular servicing is important for keeping your boiler operating safely, reliably and efficiently. A service allows us to check the boiler and its components, identify potential problems early and make sure it is operating correctly. Regular servicing can also help prevent unexpected breakdowns and may be a requirement of your manufacturer's warranty. For landlords, an annual gas safety check is a legal requirement, although this is different from a full boiler service. We recommend having your boiler serviced once a year, ideally before the colder months.

How much is a boiler service?

A boiler service is £120 to £350 depending on the appliance and whether a landlord gas safety certificate is included. We will confirm the price when you book.

How long does a service take?

A standard annual service usually takes around an hour. If we find a fault while we are there we will explain what it is, how urgent it is and what it would cost to put right, with no pressure to decide on the spot.

What is the difference between a service and a gas safety check?

A gas safety check confirms that the appliance is safe to use and is a legal requirement for landlords every 12 months, resulting in a CP12 certificate. A full service goes further: the boiler is opened up, the components are checked and cleaned where needed, and the appliance is tested to make sure it is running correctly. We can carry out both on the same visit.

Do you do landlord gas safety certificates?

Yes. We carry out landlord gas safety checks and issue the CP12 certificate you need for your records and for your tenants. We take on landlord, letting agent and property manager work across Bedford and Milton Keynes.

When is the best time of year to book a service?

Before the colder months, ideally late summer or early autumn. Booking then means any fault is found while you are not relying on the heating, and you avoid the winter rush when everyone discovers their boiler has a problem on the same cold weekend.

Will you be able to get the system up and running today?

In most cases, yes. We aim to diagnose and repair central heating problems as quickly as possible, with many common faults being repaired during the first visit. If a replacement part is required that we do not have available, we will explain what is needed and arrange the repair as soon as possible. Our priority is to get your heating and hot water back up and running with minimal disruption.

How much does a heating repair cost?

Central heating repairs are typically £280 to £450 depending on the fault and the parts involved. We will tell you what the repair will cost once we have diagnosed the problem, before we carry it out.

Why are some of my radiators cold at the top?

That is usually trapped air, and bleeding the radiator often fixes it. If radiators are cold at the bottom instead, that generally points to sludge build up in the system, which needs flushing rather than bleeding. If bleeding has not helped, give us a call and we will test the system properly.

My boiler pressure keeps dropping. What does that mean?

A system that loses pressure repeatedly almost always has a leak somewhere, or a failed expansion vessel or pressure relief valve. Topping it up again and again masks the problem rather than fixing it, and a persistent leak can cause damage over time, so it is worth getting it looked at properly.

Is it better to repair or replace an old system?

It depends on the age of the boiler, what has failed and what the repair costs relative to a replacement. We will give you an honest answer. If a system is genuinely at the end of its life we will say so rather than sell you a repair that will not last, and we can quote for the replacement at the same visit.

Do you work on systems you did not install?

Yes. We repair and service all makes and models of boiler and heating system, whether or not we installed them.

Can you repair my plumbing problem today?

In most cases, yes. We aim to attend plumbing repair enquiries as quickly as possible and resolve the problem during the first visit wherever practical. Whether it is a leaking pipe, blocked toilet, faulty tap, burst pipe or another plumbing issue, we will diagnose the problem, explain what is required and carry out the repair efficiently. If a specific part is needed that is not available immediately, we will let you know and arrange the repair as soon as possible.

How much do plumbing repairs cost?

Plumbing repairs are typically £120 to £300 depending on the job and the parts involved. You get a price before we start the work.

What should I do if a pipe bursts?

Turn the water off at the stopcock first, which is usually under the kitchen sink or near where the mains enters the property. Then open the cold taps to drain the system down and reduce the flow. Once that is done, call us on 07519 848846 and we will get to you as quickly as we can.

Do you fit taps, toilets and bathroom plumbing?

Yes. We fit and repair taps, valves, toilets, basins, showers and general bathroom and kitchen plumbing, as well as hot water cylinders and immersion heaters.

Can you clear a blocked toilet or drain?

Yes. We clear blocked toilets, sinks and waste pipes as part of our general plumbing work, and we will tell you if what we find points to a bigger drainage problem rather than a simple blockage.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. We take on work for landlords, agents and property managers on single and multi unit properties, covering reactive repairs, maintenance and annual gas safety checks across Bedford and Milton Keynes.
